The Art of designing of Uzbek fabrics is indeed an outstanding phenomenon of popular art. It combines high traditions of antiquity and vivid sense of modernity. Various plain and patterned handcrafted cotton, silk, semisilk fabrics of complex and simple textures were produced in Samarkand, Bukhara, Margilan, Kitab and others. The fabrics were used for making national traditional dresses and home decorations. The most famous were dense and woven of cotton and silk: piled velvet "bakhmals", repp, adras, bekasab, banoras. Methods of ornamentation of these fabrics were mainly in strip and pattern, the main features of which were indistinct with blurred contours. This method is called "abrbandi" in Central Asia, and the fabrics "abr". The main pattern-formatting importance of stripped and abr fabrics contains the foundation. Uzbek fabrics attract by the beauty of colors, pure and plain dyes. Of all the textile arts of Central Asia it is the abr velvet fabric called "Bahkmal" that you will probably find the most exciting. The brilliance in color and extraordinary pattern designs are reminiscent of modern painting. Many of the motifs originated from flowers, fruits, animals, household items and images that are in people's daily lives. The region of Alo Bakhmal is Bukhara, Uzbekistan. It is a pure silk handcrafted abr velvet fabric. Warp threads In Bakhmal pile were dyed using the ikat technique. The production of Alo Bakhmal was very expensive and only reach people could afford such a luxury - to own a chapan robe made of it. This wonderful fabric had been produced for several years in the late 19th century, after which the production stopped and the technique was lost. Only few samples of "bakhmal" were kept in museums after that. But in 2002 the old technique was restored in Marghilan, Uzbekistan. Size : 15,7 x 39,3 in/40 x 100 cm. Condition: excellent.
